2025 Christmas Tree Collection Day!

Celebrate a ”Green” Christmas with HPU’s Tree Recycling Program

The Program:

HPU in collaboration with the City of Hibbing is accepting your Christmas trees at the Hibbing Recycling Center. Your donated trees will eventually be chipped and processed through the Hibbing Renewable Energy Center (HREC) to power and heat our city.

Trees can be dropped off is available to all at the Hibbing Green Recycling Center at 1507 E. Howard St. Drop off your tree at your own convince. The Center is open 24 hours, seven days a week. Look for signs that read “Brush & Tree Limbs Only” and “Christmas Trees Here.” The trees must be real and cannot be flocked, painted or fake. Be sure to remove all ornaments and tree stands. Wreathes, garland and other evergreen decorations with wires are not recyclable and should be thrown in the trash.

Community Collection Day

In coordination with the Chapter of the Hibbing High School Key Club, HPU and the City will be offering a Community Collection Day on Sunday, January 18th, 2024. Students gather and deliver trees starting at 8:30 am. This program will be limited to the first 120 Hibbing residences who register for the program with HPU. In order to register you must have a Hibbing Address and a tree that meets the previous qualifications for recycling. What Biomass means for Hibbing

Using a 135Klbs/hr. Biomass Boiler, HPU has been able to create a market in Northern Minnesota for what was once considered waste wood. This waste wood, if not used, would contribute to methane emissions through natural decomposition. Through Biomass operations, HPU is able to properly utilize the potential energy of this waste wood and turn it into electricity and steam heat for the City of Hibbing.

Due to HPU’s existing infrastructure and the renewable nature of burning of waste wood, Biomass is a common-sense solution to provide a sustainable and independent energy future for Hibbing. HPU believes that the people of Hibbing are best qualified to care for themselves and Biomass operations ensure that the jobs, industry, and decision making of energy production stay within Hibbing’s city limits.
