Water Projects Open House

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend HPU’s Water Project Open House on April 30th. HPU staff was incredibly pleased with the level of interest and quality of conversations that took place during the event. HPU recognizes that it is only through engaging our ratepayers that we can optimize these and future projects to best serve the unique needs and culture of our community. Some primary topics of conversation from the public was regarding the location of “Carey Valley” and the effect of a well field development on owners of private wells.

“Carey Valley” is a term coined to describe the Groundwater Table located east of town, directly south of Carey Lake. This location was chosen after careful consideration. A ground water source is always preferable to above ground water source due the natural protection from contaminants provided by the Earth. The development of this water table was also chosen over others due to its potential for additional development to match the future needs of our community.

Some attendants expressed concern with the effect that this well field could have on their private wells. Fortunately, this matter is well regulated to safeguard the interests private well owners. By law, HPU must conduct comprehensive studies to assess the impact of the well field on surrounding wells and compensate well owners for necessary modifications due to changes in the water table.

Public outreach and the support of our community are amongst the top priorities for HPU. With this event and continued transparency in decision-making processes, HPU hopes to continue earn the trust and support of our community.

A special thanks to HPAT for recording this event for the public to view online. This recording will be posted on the HPAT channels and shared by HPU once it is made available.
