Hibbing Water Main Capital Improvement Plan

Project Status: Active – ~66% Complete

Existing Infrastructure: 1920’s installed 6″ cast iron water main

Qualifying Factors: This project was selected due to the age of existing infrastructure, importance to system operations, and alignment with City of Hibbing Paving Plan.

Scope of Work: Direct replacement of ~1,500 Linear Feet of water main and ~1,000 Linear Feet of steam line.

Cost: Preliminary Engineering Estimate of $1.7 million

Weekly Project Updates

  • Week of August 10th (Planned)
    • Pouring concrete curb and gutter

Past weeks –

  • Week of August 3th
    • Pour steam vault lid on vault N7.
    • Pour steam duct top on exposed duct located to the north of Lincoln Elementary.  
    • Continue roadway preparation work
  • Week of July 27th
    • Walls on steam vault N8 have been poured.  
    • Lids on steam vaults N6, N8 and N9 have been poured.
    • Steam vaults N4A and N6 have been backfilled.
    • City of Hibbing storm sewer on the east side of Brooklyn has been completed.
  • Week of July 20th
    • Pour steam vault walls on N8/N9.
    • Pour steam vault lids on N7-N9.
    • Continue roadway preparation work.
    • Continue internal steam work as vaults and tunnel are exposed.
  • Week of July 13th   
    • Saw cut and removed lids of steam vaults in Brooklyn Drive (N8 & N9).
    • Continued roadway preparation work.
    • Connected new 2” water service to 2239 E Beltline Garage.
    • Removed temporary water system.
    • Continued steam tunnel and vault internal work.
  • Week of July 6th   
    • Bacteria testing on new 12” watermain on E 23rd Street.
    • Continued storm work near Brooklyn Drive.
    • Exposed steam vaults and tunnel in Brooklyn Drive (N8 and N9).
    • Continued steam work on exposed tunnels and vaults.
    • Roadway sub cut work starting west working east on E 23rd St.
    • Formed and poured steam vault walls on Vaults N5 and N6.
  • Week of June 29th  
    • Continued storm work in Brooklyn Drive.
    • Connected new hydrant east of 2239 E Beltline Garage along TH 169.
    • Pressure tested new 12” watermain along E 23rd Street and north along TH 169 up to new hydrant.
    • Continued steam work in exposed vaults.  
  • Week of June 22nd  
    • Completed watermain connections in Brooklyn Drive.
    • Installed new hydrant near Brooklyn Drive.
    • Completed watermain connections from E 23rd Street to 12th Ave E.
  • Week of June 15th  
    • Complete north and south watermain connections and service at 11th Ave E and 23rd Street.
    • Complete watermain connection at 12th Ave E and 23rd Street
  • Week of June 8th  
    • Completed watermain connections on north and south crossings of 10th Ave E and E 23rd Street.
    • Directionally drilled all 12” mainline watermain.
    • Completed watermain connection on E 23rd Street to north run of 12” watermain along HWY 169.
  • Week of June 1st 
    • Mill pavement in entire project area.
    • Continued work to expose steam vaults and tunnel. ( N5, N6, N7)
    • Installed new 6” valve on Brooklyn Dr.
    • Established connections to temporary water system on Brooklyn Dr.
    • Started other project area removals.
