Hibbing Public Utilities is completing a system-wide upgrade to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in 2026. This project replaces existing utility meters with modern technology that will improve the reliability, efficiency, and accuracy of HPU’s electric, water, and natural gas systems.
The AMI project is an important investment in the long-term operation of HPU’s utility systems and will provide customers with more reliable service for years to come.
Who is doing the work?
Electric Meters – Hunt Electric
External meter replacement are actively being performed. No scheduling is needed, but customers will be notified as work continues.
Water Meters – Hydrocorp

How AMI Meters Work
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) uses secure wireless technology to automatically transmit meter readings from your electric, water, and natural gas meters to HPU. This technology eliminates the need for monthly manual meter readings while providing HPU with accurate and real-time data.

Will I be charged for the new meters?
No, this is a budgeted utility project. There will be no fee or charge for HPU customers.
Are these meters safe?
Yes. These meters utilize radio frequency technology, but at levels well below guidelines set by the FCC. They have lower radio frequency levels than cell phones, microwaves and WiFi routers.
Will my meters be exchanged at the same time?
No, each meter could be exchanged on a different day. Externally located meters can be exchanged without appointments and at a much faster rate. Internally located meter exchanges will require access to the meter inside customer’s property so appointments will need to be scheduled.
Will HPU be controlling anything in my home/business?
No. This system will be used for collecting and reporting utility usage data from the meters. In the future, there could be programs customers may want to participate in utilizing this technology, but enrollment would be voluntary and at the discretion of each customer. These programs could be related to energy conservation, load management or time-of-use savings.
