7/15 – Maximum Generation Event Underway at HREC

You may notice increased noise and activity while the Hibbing Renewable Energy Center (HREC) is operates at max generation.

Heat Wave Drives High Pricing:

Persistent heat and reduced renewable production across the US have pushed electricity demand and wholesale energy prices to exceptionally high levels. While a typical summer day averages ~$26/MWh, tomorrow’s market forecast anticipates an average price of ~$168/MWh, with evening pricing exceeding $724/MWh during peak demand.

Local Generation Puts Hibbing First:

HREC allows HPU to generate enough electricity to help meet Hibbing’s local demand while protecting residents from pricing volatility. During periods of extreme demand, local generation helps protect customer reliability by reducing Hibbing’s dependence on strained, external power markets.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as our operators work around the clock to keep the lights on both here in Hibbing and across the region.
