HPU staff is managing the impact of the critical winter weather event currently affecting the country. Just like we experienced with the Polar Vortex of 2021, severe weather across the country can impact both natural gas supply and pricing here in Hibbing. Gas Supply across Northern MN is currently further complicated by the pipeline rupture in Willow River last week.
Because of these issues, HPU’s gas supplier has issued a force majeure, which temporarily excuses the supplier from contractual duties and pricing. Despite this, Hibbing’s gas supply and pricing have stayed within expected levels. This means that at this point, there are no pricing impacts to HPU customers.
Our staff will continue to monitor the natural gas pricing, and if the situation changes, we are committed to quick and transparent communication so we can all be prepared.
The best way for individuals to avoid the impacts of pricing volatility would be to consider reducing usage. Here are some quick & effective energy-saving tips.
Cold-Weather Energy Saving Tips:
• Ensure gas meters are free of ice to allow a safe & consistent flow
• Lower your thermostat by a few degrees when sleeping or away from home
• Seal drafts around doors and windows to keep warm air inside
• Use ceiling fans on low, clockwise setting to circulate heat
• Open curtains for windows facing the sun to take advantage of some natural warmth
• Check your natural gas furnace vents for ice ups that can lead to malfunctions.
Using energy wisely during extreme cold helps reduce strain on the system and supports service affordability for everyone in Hibbing.
Stay warm, stay safe, and thank you for doing your part.
