The Turbine Generator #3 Rebuild Project is well under way at the Hibbing Renewable Energy Center. TG#3 (shorthand) was last serviced in 2016, however Turbines typically need to be serviced every five (5) years. In this project the turbine will be disassembled and pieces will be sent across the country in order to be serviced and repaired. The purpose of this work will be to increase the operational efficiency and reliability of the electrical generation system. The ability to generate our own electricity is vitally important to the future of Hibbing Public Utilities and its rate payers.
As you may be aware, HPU is growing our Biomass Operations. With this process we can turn waste wood into electricity. There are many reasons that this is beneficial, but the most important are; Biomass is our cheapest fuel source and it creates form of renewable, carbon neutral energy. Regardless of if this means anything to you or not, Biomass provides ratepayers with cheap, reliable energy and will be able to do so well into the future.
